Metathelypteris burrowsiorum is known from only one locality, and based on its very restricted area of occupancy and extent of occurrence, has been assessed as Vulnerable under Criterion D2.  At the time of assessment, there was no information available on any threats to this population.

Range Description: This species has only been found in one locality in the Lubombo Mountains in Eswatini.  The locality is close to the border with Mozambique, so it is possible that this plant might also be found in Mozambique.

Habitat and Ecology
Habitat and Ecology: This species is a terrestrial plant, found on soils derived from underlying rhyolite of the Jozini Formation, in a seasonally dry stream bed protected from the erosive action of floodwater by a boulder.  It is found in the savanna biome, within vegetation type Southern Lebombo Bushveld (SVI16) (Mucina et. al. 2018).
