Assessment Rationale

Erica swaziensis is only known from a very restricted area in northwestern Eswatini, with an estimated extent of occurrence of 41.414 km2, and an area of occupancy of 24 km2.  The older records for this species do not have precise locality information, and may well overlap with more recent records, and based on this, the number of locations for this species was estimated as five.  There are potential threats from urban development affecting part of its range, and potential habitat degradation from ongoing livestock grazing.  However, at the time of assessment there was no evidence of decline in range or habitat for this species.  Based on this, it was assessed as Vulnerable under Criterion D2.

Distribution

Geographic Range

This species is known from northwestern Eswatini, from the Mbabane and Pine Valley areas, and in the Forbes Reef area.  Precise locality information is not available for some of the older records, and the localities might coincide with more recent records.

Area of Occupancy (AOO)

Estimated area of occupancy (AOO) - in km2Justification
24The estimated area of occupancy is based on the 8 localities recorded for this species, calculated using GeoCAT (Bachman et al. 2011), with the standard 2x2 km grid cell being applied.
Continuing decline in area of occupancy (AOO)QualifierJustification
NoInferredThere is no documented decline in the area of occupancy.
Extreme fluctuations in area of occupancy (AOO)Justification

Locations Information

Number of LocationsJustification
5Although this species is known from 8 localities, giving an estimated area of occupancy of 24 km2, the older records for this species do not have precise locality information, and might coincide with more recent records. Based on the available information, the number of locations has been estimated as five.
Continuing decline in number of locationsQualifierJustification
Unknown-Localities from older records have not all been visited in recent years.
Extreme fluctuations in the number of locationsJustification
Unknown-

Very restricted AOO or number of locations (triggers VU D2)

Very restricted in area of occupancy (AOO) and/or # of locationsJustification
YesAlthough this species is known from 8 localities, giving an estimated area of occupancy of 24 km2, the older records for this species do not have precise locality information, and might coincide with more recent records. Based on the available information, the number of locations has been estimated as five.

Population

No detailed population surveys have been conducted for this species.  For the purposes of this assessment, the continued existence of this plant has been assumed for localities from older records.  The plant is difficult to find due to its small size and its occurrence within densely vegetated grassland, so it might well still occur in these areas.
