Kalanchoe alticola has a very restricted distribution and is
only known from very few records, its estimated extent of occurrence
was calculated as 837,872 km2 and area of occupancy 12 km2.
At the time of this assessment there was no information on threats to
this species. Based on this, it has been assessed as Vulnerable
under Criterion D2.

This species is recorded as growing in rock crevices in the Eswatini highveld on hilltops. The vegetation type is KaNgwane Montane Grassland (Gm16), and based on the approximate locality for the record in South Africa, Legogote Sour Bushveld (SVI9) (Mucina et. al. 2018). The latter vegetation type requires confirmation due to the inaccurate locality information for this record.

|---|---|---|---|
| 4.7. Grassland -> Grassland - Subtropical/Tropical High Altitude | - | Suitable | Yes |
| Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat? | Qualifier | Justification |
|---|---|---|
| No | Inferred | The rocky hilltops in the Eswatini highveld, although subject to heavy grazing and burning, still provide habitat for species such as this one. |
