Metathelypteris burrowsiorum is known from only one
locality, and based on its very restricted area of occupancy and extent
of occurrence, has been assessed as Vulnerable under Criterion
D2. At the time of assessment, there was no information available
on any threats to this population.

This species has only been found in one locality in the Lubombo Mountains in Eswatini. The locality is close to the border with Mozambique, so it is possible that this plant might also be found in Mozambique.
| Estimated area of occupancy (AOO) - in km2 | Justification |
|---|---|
| 4 | This species is only known from one locality in the Lubombo Mountains in eastern Eswatini, calculated using GeoCAT (Bachman et al. 2011), with the standard 2x2 km grid cell being applied. |
| Continuing decline in area of occupancy (AOO) | Qualifier | Justification |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown | - | No information is currently available on any population trends. |
Extreme fluctuations in area of occupancy (AOO): (Not specified)
| Estimated extent of occurrence (EOO)- in km2 | EOO estimate calculated from Minimum Convex Polygon | Justification |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | true | This species is only known from one locality in the Lubombo Mountains in eastern Eswatini. The estimated extent of occurrence calculated using GeoCAT (Bachman et al. 2011) was 0 km2, less than the area of occupancy, so the higher figure has been used here. |
| Continuing decline in extent of occurrence (EOO) | Qualifier | Justification |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown | - | No information is currently available on any population trends. |

This species is a terrestrial plant, found on soils derived from underlying rhyolite of the Jozini Formation, in a seasonally dry stream bed protected from the erosive action of floodwater by a boulder. It is found in the savanna biome, within vegetation type Southern Lebombo Bushveld (SVI16) (Mucina et. al. 2018).
