Estimated area of occupancy (AOO) - in km2Justification
24The estimated area of occupancy for this species is based on 8 records, calculated using GeoCAT (Bachman et al. 2011), with the standard 2x2 km grid cell being applied.
Continuing decline in area of occupancy (AOO)QualifierJustification
NoInferredThere is currently no known decline in area of occupancy.
Very restricted in area of occupancy (AOO) and/or # of locationsJustification
YesThe estimated area of occupancy for this species, based on currently available information, is 24 km2, and the number of locations estimated at five. This might increase if more fieldwork is carried out in the Lubombo Mountains.

Continuing decline in area, extent and/or quality of habitat?QualifierJustification
NoInferredThis species favours rocky areas which are unlikely to have been affected by grazing.

Ths species grows on hot shallow soils overlying rhyolite, in partial to full sun.  The vegetation type where it has been recorded is Southern Lebombo Bushveld (SVI16), with one record from Ironwood Dry Forest (FOz9) (Mucina et. al. 2018).

Selaginella culverwellii has a very restricted distribution, with an estimated extent of occurrence of 549.711 km2, and an area of occupancy of 24 km2.  Although there is widespread loss of natural habitat in the area where this species is found, its specific habitat requirements for rocky areas provide it with protection from grazing and burning.  Based on this, it has been assessed as Vulnerable under Criterion D2.
