An observational study of people with HIV and AIDS receiving homoeopathic treatment in resource-limited settings has been carried out.

This is a pragmatic retrospective study of 337 HIV/AIDS patients who are receiving homoeopathic treatment as part of the Swaziland Homoeopathy Project, rural outreach clinic program. The allopathic treatment of HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis in Swaziland, particularly in resource-limited settings, is outlined with particular reference to its side-effects. The role of homoeopathy and its effectiveness as an adjunct to the standard medical approach is shown. The benefits of including homoeopathy in the treatment of HIV/AIDS especially in patients not yet receiving Anti Retroviral Therapy is discussed.

The results of the analysis of VAS symptom scores and overall health scores are illustrated, together with a statistical analysis of average overall patient scores. Data demonstrates that 77% of patients report improved overall health scores after the first month of homoeopathic treatment. Symptom score analysis shows that 65% of the symptoms are improved, with a marked positive change after the initial consultation. Mental/emotional symptoms were those most dramatically improved.

The study shows how the use of a simple scoring system and a comprehensive database can provide a large amount of useful ongoing clinical information. It is clear from the data presented that homoeopathy is a successful intervention in the treatment of all HIV/AIDS patients, regardless of whether they are already receiving ART. It confirms the suitability of homoeopathic treatment for HIV/AIDS in resource-limited settings.

In August 2011 an article about the project's data collection and analysis was published in “Homeopathy in Practice – The Journal of the Alliance Registered Homeopaths”.
